Chapter 16

Nora

The angels had cleared out the armoury. Only the broken weapons that weren’t fixable remained covered in cobwebs. One of them had cleaned up Nora’s javelin, so it was ready to use. He’d sharpen the tip before the battle, but for now it was safer to train with a blunt tip. Nora could experience the real weight of the weapon.

The angels were kind enough to help her train now that Diana was gone, teaching her the basics of melee combat. Her muscles ached terribly after every training session, and she had a hard time explaining her exhaustion to her parents. She was lucky enough to have a bath to soothe her mind and body, and she noticed changes within herself too—she stood up straighter and her anxiety about fighting lessened.

She started to enjoy working with her body. Using slow and controlled movements helped her clear her mind, like a kind of meditation. While she trained, the others looked for the spear. Lucifer had contacted an old friend in Spain and he relied on his answer Matthew knew of the man, but never contacted him himself. It was rare for Matthew to not know a regular human involved in the supernatural world but this particular family weren’t exactly team players. Matthew did his own digging for information but hadn’t found anything so far.

The doorbell of the headquarters rang for the first time ever. Nora ran towards the door to open it, Matthew following closely behind. Three women stood before her in black leather, with more metal on their clothes than in the armoury inside, holding a large package.

“We’re here to join your cause.” The one who spoke didn’t even wait for an invite and barged in.

Nora raised an eyebrow and jumped aside, to avoid all the metal studs on the woman’s jacket.

“Who are you?” Matthew asked the other two.

“We’re succubi. Lord Lucifer sent us with a package. He’ll be back after he has finished his business.” The woman winked and licked her lips while looking at Matthew.

He swallowed hard and said, “Can I do anything for you?”

“Take this, and take us to our room. We’ll stay there until Lord Lucifer returns.” She shoved the package in Nora’s hands and went inside.

Nora couldn’t help but wonder if Lucifer knew it was her birthday. No one here knew. And her friends knew not to make a big deal out of today. No, Lucifer couldn’t know. It was just a coincidence.

“I guess we have more allies,” Matthew murmured. “What’s in the package?”

Nora struggled to hold the package and put it on the ground carefully. “I don’t know, it’s heavy.”

“You don’t think…?”

“Nah, it’s too short and bulgy for that. I mean…” She held up the javelin. “It’s not even the same shape.”

Matthew picked up the package, and they walked to the library, where no one would disturb them. He unwrapped the package and held up a long, gnarly piece of wood. It was all twisted, the tip pointy, but not sharp.

Nora frowned. “Why would Lucifer send us a branch?”

“I don’t know.
